“The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” is a compilation of twelve short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, first released on October 14, 1892. These stories, initially serialized in The Strand Magazine between July 1891 and June 1892, mark the earliest appearances of Sherlock Holmes in short fiction. Despite lacking a fictional chronology, they all feature Holmes and Dr. Watson, narrated from Watson’s perspective.
These tales often address and seek to rectify social injustices, portraying Holmes as an advocate for a fairer form of justice. The collection’s popularity significantly increased subscriptions to The Strand Magazine, enabling Doyle to negotiate higher pay for his subsequent works. One notable story, “A Scandal in Bohemia,” introduces Irene Adler, a character who became prominent in modern adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, often depicted as Holmes’ love interest. Among the twelve stories, Doyle singled out “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” as his personal favorite, including it among his top twelve Sherlock Holmes stories.
