French Concession
Arrival in Shanghai: A Deadly Welcome
A boat from Hong Kong docks at Shanghai harbor, carrying a significant figure from the Nationalist Party and his captivating wife, Leng. As the harbor erupts in the raucous sound of firecrackers, gunshots suddenly shatter the air. An assassin has shot the official before turning the gun on himself, plunging the scene into chaos. Amid the pandemonium, Leng mysteriously vanishes, leaving behind more questions than answers.
The Photographer’s Obsession
Among the passengers, Hsueh, a Franco-Chinese photographer, is captivated by Leng’s striking beauty and the unmistakable sorrow she wears like a veil. With Leng now missing, Hsueh becomes haunted by the memory of her, but another, more personal enigma soon confronts him. He begins to suspect that his White Russian lover, Therese, is being unfaithful. Why else would she have disappeared so often during their recent vacation in the French Concession?
A Sinister Discovery
Hsueh’s world darkens when he is unexpectedly arrested in the French Concession and forced to become a police informant. As he delves into the seedy underbelly of Shanghai, he uncovers a shocking truth. Therese is secretly an arms dealer, supplying weapons to the city’s most dangerous gangs. His investigation confirms his worst fears. It also leads him back to Leng, revealing her as a dedicated revolutionary with ties to a new and menacing gang led by a charismatic Communist.
The Dangerous Game
Hsueh finds himself drawn into a treacherous world of mobsters, smugglers, and assassins, torn between his loyalty to Therese and his desire to protect Leng. As the intrigue tightens its grip, Hsueh must navigate the perilous waters of Shanghai’s criminal underworld, where no one is who they appear to be. His survival depends on playing a dangerous game, balancing his love for two women against the deadly forces closing in on him.
